Funny Quotes
“One should never direct people towards happiness, because happiness too is an idol of the market-place. One should direct them towards mutual affection. A beast gnawing at its prey can be happy too, but only human beings can feel affection for each other, and this is the highest achievement they can aspire to.”- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

I can’t believe it…

“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.”

~ Winston Churchill

With the internet it’s probably possible for a lie to get all the way around the world several times before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

So how do you find the truth online?
How do you check the facts?

Here are a couple of websites that can help you sort fact from fiction and outright lies:

For sorting through urban legends and dubious emails there is no better website than: http://www.snopes.com/

This site is dedicated to stomping out “eRumors” that show up in your email: http://www.truthorfiction.com/

This site was made famous in the last presidential election. To sort through all the political information out there the Annenberg Foundation set-up http://www.factcheck.org/

Speaking of politics, if you prefer your facts with a specific political slant you might want to consider one of these two websites:

http://www.mediaresearch.org/ Fact checking with a conservative slant

http://mediamatters.org/ Fact checking with a liberal slant

Since most of these sites cater to adult audiences you might want to consider this website as a resource for students: http://lii.org/

How to Reset an IP Address?

October 9th, 2009

For particular reasons, you may want to reset your IP address so that you can continue browsing through the World Wide Web such as when your IP is as same as others in your network or your Internet connectivity is slow.

Here is a simply way how you can reset your IP address:
Using the command from your computer without the need to power off, power on or unplug your modem to re-plug again.

  1. First, click on the Start button at the bottom on your Windows.
  2. Select the Run option and type “cmd” in the box, type “ipconfig/release” (without the quotes).
  3. Now your Internet connection is released. After few seconds, enter “ipconfig/renew” (without the quotes).
  4. Your IP address is now reset.

If the method above doesn’t work, you reset your Internet connection by using a manual IP address:

  1. Open up your Control Pannel, go to Network and Dial Up Connections.
  2. Go to your local area connection, select “Properties”.
  3. Click on “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”.
  4. Click “Properties” and select “Use the Following IP Address”.
  5. Over there you can enter an IP address available on your network.

Why hackers usually don’t care about your Computer

October 7th, 2009

Contrary to popular belief most malicious hackers do not give a damn about giving you trojans or making your stupid windows computer crash. Then why are there so many trojans in p2p networks? Because of retarted script kiddy teenagers and nigerians that fancy themselves hackers using prebuilt trojan software. Hackers target servers. Why?

  1. Massive bandwidth.
  2. Mail servers with proper mmx records that validate spam checks
  3. The possibility for phising.
  4. Most servers are unattended meaning it can be months before the person finds out there’s a malicious script bombing emails or phising people.
  5. Exploitation of social networks.

They can get a lot of credit card numbers or bank account information email bombing thousands of emails on a hijacked server rather than waiting to find a credit card number amongst all the instant messages and random typing you / your kids type throughout the month.

Sure there’s been a lot of home PCs infected, but usually this is the result of very efficient viruses that replicate and spread in-mass. Most people have decent antivirus software for hackers to want to waste their time flooding trojans. Some hackers use hijacked home PCs as DDoS zombies, but other than that you’re more likely just to get spyware that floods you with ads.

Broadcasting to the World

September 21st, 2009

Some technology tips are informational pieces that help you use existing software. Others serve to highlight a specific feature on the internet. And still others are just designed to help the reader keep track of the rapid pace of technology. Today’s tip falls into that later category. It is a glimpse at the possibilities and the pitfalls of currently available technology.

Home video cameras have been around for decades and the internet has been around for well over a decade. These two elements are coming together to distribute some of the most amazing, interesting, humorous, educational and sometimes disturbing images to anyone on the planet with a computer. And as this online video explosion takes place there are companies like Google trying to organize it. Here are some video search engines to check out:

http://www.youtube.com/ The premier free video site which was bought by Google in 2006.

http://video.google.com/ Searches the internet for videos, also displays recent searches and most popular searches

http://video.search.yahoo.com/ Same as above, also lists features and recent updates

http://www.hulu.com/ Watch TV shows on the internet (commercials and all) for free at this website.

And here’s one just for educators: http://www.teachertube.com/
and a popular one for teachers in the U.K.: http://www.teachers.tv/

Want some more to pick from?

A to Z Guide to Video Websites: http://www.videomenu.com/

Students of middle school age and mentality know about these websites, and they also know about other sites such as http://www.stupidvideos.com/ which cater to their unique sense of humor.

Now you might think this is silly, what difference does this make to a classroom teacher? Well, it doesn’t affect you directly but it sure does affect your students. Try searching for your local school on one of these video search sites, or just ask a students if they have any videos up. They might surprise you with the pseudo-rock video they just made with their friends and decided to post so all the world could see it.

So basically, today’s Technology Tip is a bit of advice:

“If you are going to do something incredibly stupid or possibly illegal, don’t film it. And if you do film it please don’t post it online.”

And here’s a video to make you think:

It Can Even Predict the Weather

September 21st, 2009

You may not know this but one of the inventors of the first electronic computer was a physicist with a passion for predicting the weather. He figured that if he could just build an electronic calculator that was powerful enough he could use all the existing weather data and some special formulas to predict the weather. It is therefore no irony at all that today we have quite a few super computers, all around the world, using electronic weather models to predict the weather.

But how do you find the best and most accurate weather for our area?

You could start with the National Weather Service: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/

Then there’s a lot of commercial weather sites you could check out like these:

http://www.weather.com/

http://www.weatherstreet.com/

http://www.wunderground.com/

http://home.accuweather.com/

Then there’s this site which claims to have the top 100 weather sites listed on it: http://www.findanisp.com/top100/by/category/top100.php?category=30

Outside the United States you could try the
World Meteorological Organization

And if that’s not enough there’s all those news websites that also offer weather forecasts.

As for which site is the most accurate, well, that will come down to old fashioned trial and error on your part. You’ll have to check out some of these sites and see which ones you like. Some things to look for: easy to follow layout, easy to use, and accuracy.

August 31st, 2009

Some of us just don’t like to use this IM program. I myself have looked in the Add/Remove Program panel and can’t find any way to remove it there. I found out how to do it with a little research. Just go to Start->Run and type in rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf and hit ENTER. Do a copy and paste to avoid typographical errors.
